Miami is a College Town

With over 250,000 college students in public and private higher education institutions, Miami ranks among the largest college towns. Its well-respected higher education institutions, including two research universities and unique programs at each of the institutions, give students the skills needed for the current and future jobs.

The colleges, universities and vocational programs offer a comprehensive array of programs. The institutions pride themselves on having close ties to the business community through collaborative curriculum development, internships, apprenticeships, mentorships and workforce training programs.

Public Universities

Florida’s public universities are rising to new heights with higher rankings and recognition for specialized programming. Florida International University (FIU) has become one of the fastest growing state universities. Currently, 76 percent of bachelor’s degree graduates find employment or continue their education within a year of graduation. The county is also home to a nationally recognized community college. Miami Dade College is led by the dynamic Eduardo Padron, the Presidential Medal of Honor winner who has built the school into a four-year college that has become the largest institution of higher education in the United States.

Private Universities

The University of Miami in Coral Gables, one of the nation’s top private universities, prides itself on being at the cutting edge of innovation and career opportunities. With more than 16,000 students, University of Miami is a major research university, with hundreds of studies underway, particularly in medicine, marine science and engineering.

Barry University, one of the largest Catholic universities in the Southeast, offers more than 100 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree program. With a student population of 7,971, Barry offers more than 100 areas of study, with health professions, business and liberal arts and sciences among the most popular areas.

Founded in 1961, St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens develops leaders in business, justice, ministry, science, nursing, and other fields through its wide variety of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs.

The only historically black college or university in Miami, Florida Memorial University has 41 undergraduate programs and four master’s degree programs.
