Year Round Sports & Outdoor Activities

Miami’s climate and abundant beaches, parks, ocean and green spaces offer myriad opportunities for spectator sports and outdoor fun. On land, golf courses, tennis courts, biking and running paths, soccer, ball fields and basketball courts abound.

On the water, swimming and surfing, snorkeling and scuba, boating, jet skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are among Miami’s most popular recreational sports. College and professional sports teams plus world-class golf, tennis and boating tournaments plus car and horse racing keep fans busy year round.

Sports

Miami is one of the premier destinations for professional and college sports. Very few communities can boast professional teams in every sport: football, basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer, plus Division 1 College athletics; plus internationally recognized tennis, golf, sailing, motorsports and other competitions.

The Miami Heat are three-time NBA champions; the NFL’s Miami Dolphins remain the only undefeated team in the NFL; the Miami Marlins have been World Series winners and play in an iconic retractable roof stadium near downtown Miami; the Florida Panthers NHL hockey team plays just to the north in Broward County and won the Stanley Cup early in franchise history. Each year, the Orange Bowl brings top ranked college football champions to Miami, and Division 1 college athletes compete in dozens of different sports year-round.

Recreation

For outdoor fun, Miami-Dade’s beaches, boating and fishing are right at the top of list of year-round activities. There are miles of popular beaches along the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, from Sunny Isles Beach through Key Biscayne and south to Homestead’s Bayfront Park.

Just offshore is Biscayne National Park, and to the west is Everglades National Park, making Miami-Dade one of the only communities in the U.S. to have two of these natural treasures.  Golf and tennis are among the many other “fun-in-the-sun” activities that Miami-Dade residents can enjoy year-round.  The region also has an extensive network of parks and other recreational facilities, as well as an extensive network of bicycle lanes that runs throughout Miami-Dade County.

Major Parks and Recreation in Miami-Dade County

Miami’s beaches and parks rank among the best in the world including two national parks and countless pockets of natural splendor throughout the tropical landscape. Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States and Biscayne National Park preserves Biscayne Bay and it’s offshore barrier reefs where ninety-five percent of the park is water. Miami-Dade County also boasts the third largest county park system. In total, the community includes 800+ parks. Unique outdoor community gems include, for example, the mangrove forests at Matheson Hammock Park, the quiet oasis at North Shore Open Park, the historic Deering Estate with sweeping views of Biscayne Bay and the beauty of Fairchild Tropical Gardens.

Miami-Dade residents appreciate the region’s balmy weather, where they can enjoy swimming, boating, golf, tennis, running, cycling and other sports at any time. Two national parks (Everglades and Biscayne) and the Florida Keys are close at hand for scenic eco-adventures. In addition, Miami-Dade has the third largest county park system in the United States, consisting of 270 parks and 13,573 acres of land, including beaches, wetlands and many types of recreational facilities.

“I’ve been a resident of South Florida for many years, and I can tell you, unequivocally, that Miami is a unique place for both work and play. The vibrancy of our physical and cultural landscape is second to none.”

-Pat Riley, president of the Miami HEAT, 2006, 2012 and 2013 champions of the National Basketball Association.
