Armando Fernandez is the director of external affairs for Miami-Dade County for Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc. and one of the largest investor-owned electric utilities in the nation. Armando is dedicated to growing and maintaining positive, long-lasting relationships with municipal, community and business leaders in the Miami-Dade region and advocates for projects that require public support to be successful. He has held this position since Mas 2022 and joined the company in 2008.
For the past 11 years, Armando has overseen governmental relations throughout Miami-Dade as a member of the external affairs business unit. Prior to joining external affairs, he supported FPL FiberNet, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, as a wireless attachment project manager and fiber to the cell site program manager.
Prior to joining FPL, he served as T-Mobile wireless’s regional development manager for South Florida and managed the deployment of their cellular infrastructure including the network launch of their Ft. Myers and Charlotte County BTA. While at T-Mobile, he served on the E911 subcommittee reporting to the state legislature on the deployment of E911 services. Before Armando’s extensive work in the telecom industry, he served as chief of staff to Miami-Dade County Commissioner Miguel Diaz de la Portilla for seven years.
He serves on the board of directors of the American Red Cross of South Florida, Baptist Health Foundation, Jackson Health Foundation, Beacon Council, Builders Association of South Florida, South Florida Council of Boy Scouts of America, and Zoo Miami Foundation. Armando is actively engaged in his community and has volunteered for many years through several company service projects.
Armando holds his bachelor’s degree in public administration from Florida International University, where he graduated magna cum laude as a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and Phi Kappa Kappa Honor Society. Born and raised in South Florida, Armando resides in Coral Gables with his wife Analia and their son Marcus.
