Miami Is Where Business Knows No Borders

Miami-Dade County stands as a thriving hub for the Trade & Logistics industry, driven by its strategic location and robust transportation infrastructure. Home to Miami International Airport (MIA) and PortMiami, the region boasts unparalleled connectivity that facilitates the efficient movement of goods across the Americas and beyond. Miami International Airport is #1 for international freight, according to the 2024 MIA Economic Impact Study by Martin Associates. In 2023, the total trade through the Miami Customs District reached $137 billion, accounting for more than two-thirds of Florida’s two-way trade. Major exports include aircraft parts, computers, and telecommunications equipment, while leading imports include electronics, precious metals, and seafood.

Miami also serves as the leading U.S. trade partner to Latin America and the Caribbean, with approximately one-third of all U.S. exports to the region moving through Miami. This global commerce supports a substantial workforce, generating about 30,000 direct local jobs and sustaining more than 340,000 jobs across Miami-Dade County’s broader trade and logistics industry. Continued investments in road, rail, and communications infrastructure have further strengthened the region’s position as a central node in hemispheric trade.

With a warehousing capacity of 277 million square feet, Miami accommodates a wide range of logistics services tailored to various sectors, including healthcare, electronics, and fashion. The presence of free trade zones (FTZs) enhances Miami’s appeal, providing businesses with duty exemptions and streamlined customs processes. As a global leader in logistics, Miami continues to attract top organizations like Ryder, FedEx, and Crowley Logistics, reinforcing its role as one of the most important trade centers connecting North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Aeroporto Internacional de Miami

Miami International Airport (MIA) is the busiest airport for international freight in the United States and is one of the leading international air cargo gateways in the world. It serves as a critical asset for the region’s trade and logistics sectors. Handling 80% of all air imports and 70% of exports from the Latin American and Caribbean region, MIA is a leader in importing fruits, vegetables, flowers, and seafood. With a robust airline network featuring over 90 carriers, MIA provides unmatched connectivity, offering more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport. The airport’s expansive cargo facilities span approximately 2.8 million square feet and generate approximately $118 billion in annual economic activity and contribute to 300,000+ jobs statewide. With ongoing investments in infrastructure, including a $7 billion capital improvement program, MIA is poised to strengthen its role as a global logistics hub.

Porto de Miami

PortMiami stands as a crucial asset for Miami-Dade’s trade and logistics industry, generating an impressive annual economic impact of $61.4 billion, which accounts for about 4% of Florida’s GDP. As the largest container port in Florida and the 12th busiest port in the U.S., it handled over 1 million TEUs for seven consecutive years, contributing to the Miami Customs District’s total trade value of $136.6 billion in 2022. PortMiami is a major driver of the regional economy, generating more than $61 billion in annual economic activity and supporting over 340,000 jobs across Florida, including more than 29,000 direct local jobs in Miami-Dade County. Continued investments in port infrastructure and expanded shipping capacity are expected to support significant growth in container cargo volumes at PortMiami over the coming decade, strengthening its role as a key gateway for trade between the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
