South Florida Municipalities Attempt to Lure Amazon to Build Headquarters

Amazon expects to invest $5 billion in construction

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – South Florida is preparing to make a pitch to become Amazon’s second headquarters.

The Seattle-based company is asking for proposals from any city or regional economic development organization in North America.

If selected, Amazon expects to invest $5 billion in construction and grow its second headquarters to include as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs.

“I don’t want to share our entire game plan for how we plan to go after it,” Michael Finney, CEO and president of the Miami -Dade Beacon Council, said.

Finney’s group is in charge of putting together a committee that will submit a proposal to Amazon.

“You can certainly expect that we will work with our private sector business leaders, our governmental business leaders, our nonprofit partners. We are looking to pull together our entire community to ensure that we have the best possible proposal,” he said.

The proposal will include multiple sites for the headquarters and input from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties from the private and public sectors.

“City by city, we aren’t competing against each other,” Miami Commissioner Ken Russell said. “We’re working as a region to bring them here.”

Amazon, which has set a proposal deadline for Oct.19, says they’re looking for cities and regions that have access to public transportation, international airports and a big workforce that can work in the tech field.

“I sent a letter to Jeff Bezos,” Broward Commissioner Michael Udine said. “I also sent it out through social media. I also wanted to promote what Broward County has to offer to Amazon and hopefully lure him down here. This is a huge opportunity for this entire region.”

Amazon is expected to make its decision in 2018.
