Academic Leaders Council Welcomes UM President

The Beacon Council’s One Community One Goal (OCOG) Academic Leaders Council (ALC) formally introduced the University of Miami President Julio Frenk during its quarterly meeting held Nov. 11  at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.

Dr. Mark B. Rosenberg, FIU President and Chair of the ALC along with Larry K. Williams, President & CEO of The Beacon Council and OCOG Co-Chairs Nelson Lazo, CEO of Doctors Hospital and Matt Haggman, Program Director at the Knight Foundation kicked off the meeting and welcomed Dr. Frenk, who is Mexico’s former Minister of Health, a former Harvard Dean and UM’s first Hispanic president. Dr. Frenk  expressed his sincere appreciation for being welcomed to the ALC and shared insights regarding his first few months as the new leader of the University of Miami. He has said that Greater Miami, being the gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, provides UM the opportunity to be focused on global issues. He also values multiculturalism saying “diversity is an antidote to inequality.”

During the meeting, the ALC members discussed closing the skills gap, matching business needs with curriculum, career pathing and college affordability and accessibility. A top priority for the ALC is to connect employers and students for internships.  The ALC encourages businesses to offer paid internships and post them to the Talent Development Network at tdnmiami.com, an online portal for internships that allows employers to list paid internships in one place instead of having to contact universities separately and in turn students have one place to look for paid internships. The group is committed to maintaining a world-class educational ecosystem in Miami-Dade County.

    * Barry University President Sister Linda Bevilacqua
    * Florida International University President Mark B. Rosenberg

Miami-Dade’s Employment Numbers Show Growth in Key Sectors

Miami-Dade’s unemployment rate dipped to 5.9 percent in October, down from 6.3 last month, according to statistics released last Friday.

“Miami-Dade added the most jobs in the state since Oct. 2014 in the financial activities and information sector, which includes higher-paying, knowledge-based fields. This is great news for all of our partners in academia and the public and private sectors who are working so hard to align curriculum with the needs of today’s employers,” said The Beacon Council President & CEO Larry K.
