(Miami, FL) Dec.1, 2016 – Spanish telecommunications giant, Telefonica, is expanding its Miami-Dade operations by adding 20 new high-skilled technology jobs and $9 million in new capital investments to its existing Miami-Dade County data center making it the only Uptime Institute Certified Tier III Facility in South Florida (Certification provides assurances that there are not shortfalls or weak links anywhere in the data center infrastructure.)

Telefonica USA, headquartered in Miami with 208 current employees, operates its Miami data center as the focal point for companies doing business between the U.S., Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific. The data center supports multinational businesses who need to house – or colocate – their technology infrastructure in a secure, connected facility that meets the high-availability and rigorous operating standards set by the Uptime Institute, an independent industry organization. The KeyCenter™ – as its Miami data center is named – forms part of an interconnected series of Telefonica-owned and operated colocation facilities worldwide.

“The telecommunication industry has evolved radically – from an era when we used old analog phones – to having high-speed data, video streaming of digital content, and every one and every thing interconnected,” said Angel Barrio, CEO of Telefonica USA. “Today our customers are demanding more sophisticated services – like cloud computing and cyber security – from their service provider. Miami is a key juncture in our worldwide network and it has a workforce with the technological skills that are essential to working in an advanced data center environment. This expansion along with the Uptime Institute’s Tier III Facility Certification of our Miami KeyCenter™ satisfies the demands of our growing multinational client base.”

In this expansion process the Miami-Dade Beacon Council assisted Telefonica with business contacts and referrals including City and County officials and partnered with CareerSource South Florida to offer the company assistance in finding and training a skilled workforce.

“We have had a long, positive relationship with Telefonica during the years and know about their solid commitment to Miami-Dade County. They’ve hosted visits to their Madrid headquarters and innovation center during business development missions,” said Interim President & CEO of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council Sheldon T. Anderson. “They already have a workforce of 208 employees living and working here, and we are excited to be able to assist them as they grow their Miami-Dade operations.”

In addition to the KeyCenter™, Telefonica has Data Centers in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Germany and Spain. All connected via Telefonica’s own high-bandwidth network, these centers allow business clients to host and access data in multiple geographies. In a global era, these data centers are the core of the new digital enterprise.

Telefonica built and operates the 173,000 square foot KeyCenter™ in northwest Miami-Dade County. The company plans to expand that facility by another 10,000 feet in the next three years to increase capacity needed for future growth and the deployment of more Cloud Computing and IT services.
